The Stepping Up project works with children making the move from primary to secondary school in Weardale, County Durham. This is a rural area, the primary schools are very small and the change, at age 11, to the 1000+ student secondary school can be quite daunting. The project tries to ease the move - how successful it is you may be able to judge from these pages.
This web site tells the story in words and pictures, produced both by the young people themselves and by two professionals, a writer and a photographer, who worked with them.
There are two areas for you to visit on this site:
- The original web site
was created in early 1997 at the outset of the project as a way of recording the young people's feelings right at the beginning.
- The main web site
is the finished work produced by the same group of young people, who "stepped up" in September 1997 and have now completed their first year at secondary school.
